This year, the Mercy Ships South African office had the privilege of visiting the Africa Mercy while the ship was docked at Durban Harbour for its annual maintenance period. This visit provided a meaningful opportunity for the full office team to step on board the ship that lies at the heart of the mission they represent and support every day.
For many staff members, the visit allowed them to engage directly with the volunteers serving on board—those they recruit, support, and journey alongside from South Africa. Meeting these volunteers in their place of service helped deepen relationships and brought to life the dedication, skill, and compassion that sustain the hospital ship’s work.
The visit also offered the team a comprehensive understanding of how the Africa Mercy operates as a floating hospital and community. From medical facilities and engineering spaces to crew life and shared routines, seeing the ship in action provided valuable context that cannot be fully conveyed from shore. This firsthand insight equips the South African office to better support volunteers, communicate clearly with donors, and represent the mission with confidence and accuracy.
