On 29 February 2020, South African plastics and reconstructive surgeon, Dr Tertius Venter, celebrates his 20th anniversary of volunteering with Mercy Ships!

Dr Tertius shares how liberating it is to operate on patients, who are in desperate need of healthcare, without expecting a cent in return. “I used to work in both government and private hospitals in South Africa. For private hospital surgeries I would always have to think about what I would be charging my patients, and then I would have to send them the bill. When I came to the ship, the knowledge that I was able to treat patients, purely because I wanted to help them, and without thinking about money, was the most freeing feeling I’ve known.”

Thank you, Dr Tertius, for 20 years of faithful service on board our ships! We are so grateful for the part you have played in bringing hope and healing to some of the poorest.
